Mamata Banerjee Versus I-T Department On Durga Puja Tax

Claiming that the centre was indulging in "Tax Terrorism" because the party "tried and failed to
capture" Durga puja committees in the city, the states ruling Trinamool Congress help a day-long
protest in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Kolkata: Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday hit out at the Income Tex Department over its denial on levying taxes on the state's Durga Puja committees. In a Facebook and Twitter  post, the chief Minister said the department was "distorting facts" and that it had issued notices to the Puja committees last year.

Her comments came after the Central Board of Direct Taxes said in a statement that media reports
about issuance of Income Tax notices to Durga Puja Committees in Kolkata this year were not true.

Jijia used to be a Tax levied on non-Muslims under certain Muslim rulers of India.

In the press release, the CBDT has made certain claims which themselves prove that they are factually incorrect, the Trinamool Congress supremo claimed.

"These festivals are for all and we do not want any Puja festival to be taxed. this will be a burden
on the organizers. Bengal Government withdrew tax, which was earlier there, on Ganga sagar mela.
We protest against this and demand no Taxation on Durga Puja Committees", Ms Banerjee tweeted.

TMC will lead a day long protest on Tuesday against the move by the IT Department.
