Social Security checks will go out and troops will remain at their posts. Doctors and hospitals will receive their Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. 

Hundreds of thousands of tederal workers braced for a government shutdown at midnight on Friday, 21 December, as US President Donal Trump and impasse over his demand for $5 billion to build a boeder wall with Mexico.

As the clock ticked, a partial government closure appeared likely, with Trump and congressional Democrats refusing to give an inch.

Overall, more than 800,000 federal employees would see their jobs disrupted, including more than half who would be forced to continue working without pay.
