LPG cylinder prices skyrocket

   BENGALURU: The price of LPG cylinders has sky-rocketed across the state with a 14.2kg domestic cylinder costing a maximum of Rs 1,017 - the highest in the last four to five years. While the peice was recorded in Bengaluru stood at Rs 942. Compared to the LPG refill price of Rs 652 in April in the city, the cost has sky-rocketed by 40 per cent. A refilled cylinder currently costs Rs 941.

Thede debit, credit cards won't be valid from January 1

New Delhi, Nov 24: Come 1 January 2019, some debit or credit cards may not function. According to an old directive issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the cards with magnetic strip need to be replaced with the EMV chip, PIN-based ones by December31, 2018. The central bank had issued the directive on August 27, 2015, and given the banks more then three years to complete the transition. The RBI had started that ''with effect from September 1, 2015 all new cards issued- debit and credit, domestic and international-shall be EMV chip and PIN based cards''.   Users need not panic as they still have some time left to replace the old-technology cards from their existing lending if they haven't done it so far. Bengali filmmaker Mrinal Sen dies at 95

   New Delhi: Legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen died at the age of 95 on December, 30. Accroding to Anandabazar Patrika, Sen died around 10:30 am at his home in Bhawanipore, Kolkata. He had been suffering from age-related aliments for a long time. West Bengal chief minister mamata Banerjee tweeted about his death. ''Saddened at the passing away of Mrinal Sen. A great loss to the film industry. My condolences to his family,'' her tweet read. Mrinal was born in Faridpur in Bangladesh on May 14, 1923. After completing high school in Bangladesh, Sen came to Kolkata. He studied phyaics at Scottish Church College. He got a Post-Graduate Degree from the University of Culcutta. The filmmaker is considered to be one of the greatest ambassadors of Indian parallel cinema at an international level. He is know for helming films like 'Bhuvan Shome', Mrigaya', 'Akaler Sandhane' and Calcutta 71'.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital scientists have mapped the effects of aberrant biological machinery that drives a deadly brain cancer called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). The research included development of a genetically engineered mouse that will offer ways to further understanding of such brain cancers, as a laboratory model for developing more effective treatments. The findings appear online today in the journal Cancer Cell.
